Our Breeding Philosophy
"Breeding for Quality, not Quantity"
We have had this wonderful breed since 1991 but didn't produce our first litter until 2004. It took us a long time of searching and being prepared, before we decided we found Mals that were of breeding quality. We have anywhere from 0-2 litters a year, never more. Beware of breeders that say they "only" have 6-7 litters a year but because they love them like children, they are not a puppy mill. That couldn't be further from the truth. When we decide to do a breeding we consider every aspect..... Is this pair a match in conformation and temperament? Do both sire and dam have all of their health clearances? Do we think that they will more than likely not produce major health issues? And most importantly, if the new owners are incapable of keeping this pup at any time in it's life, can we take him/her back? If any of those answers are no, then we do not do the breeding.
We breed our Malamutes to AKC standard or as close to it as possible. Some will be slightly larger and some will be slightly smaller but we do not strive to breed giants at any time. Yes, Mals should be strong and powerful, but they can be in standard sizes too. Any size Malamute, or dog for that matter, can pull massive amounts of weight for 16 feet. We weight pull our dogs and they have shown us that. However, we sled our dogs too, which is what the breed was originally intended to do, and can assure you that our smaller or standard Mals have 10 times the endurance of the 95 and 115 lbers we used to have. In addition, woollies/long coats, floppy ears and reds or whites are not rare and we certainly don't charge by the pound.
Since we breed only when we need more dogs for our team and breeding program, we do not strive to produce every color in the rainbow. When we go outside of our kennel to breed one of our girls, we look at everything EXCEPT color. If we get a color other than gray & white that is wonderful, but one should not be able to "custom order" any color they choose. These are living creatures, not vehicles or covers for a iphone. Same with payment plans - again this is not a vehicle. If you don't have the money, perhaps you should rethink buying a pup until you can afford it (and that includes affording all a pup's expenses for it's entire 10-15 year life!)
When a puppy is purchased from us, you are "stuck" with us for the life of that pup. As a breeder, we feel, it is our duty to be available for that pup for as long as it shall live. We put them here on this earth by doing the breeding, therefore, we are responsible for them for the rest of their lives. Not only will we take them back if needed, we care about any problems or concerns you may have and are always there to give advice or help you find the answers you are looking for, whether it be a training question or health concern, or anything else. If you want to buy a pup then cut all ties with us, then please don't apply for a pup, or adopt an adult, from us. They are our "kids" and we will hound you for pictures and updates on a regular basis. It is time consuming for me to do this, so if you are not willing then please save us both the trouble and buy elsewhere.
And of course, we sell our pups with health guarantees on spay/neuter contracts to companion homes or breeding contract to breeding/showing/working homes. (the latter contract is rare) All pups are microchipped, dewormed and started on vaccines before leaving us. AKC papers are always provided when they go to their new homes, not promised to you at a later date. The pups are socialized to the best of our ability before leaving us, training started and never leave before 8 weeks of age.
